FIELD: biotechnology.

SUBSTANCE: method for identifying a microorganism strain that produces at least one pound of nitrogen per acre per season is proposed. The method includes the analysis of two or more strains of microorganisms-candidates for colonizing ability and nitrogen production per microorganism per hour. The following is identified: at least one strain of microorganisms from these two or more strains of candidate microorganisms, which have a product of (i) colonizing ability and (ii) N produced per microorganism per hour of at least about 2.5 × 10-8 mmol N per gram wet weight of plant root tissue per hour. At the same time, at least one strain of microorganisms from these two or more strains of candidate microorganisms have an average colonizing ability per unit of plant root tissue of at least 1.79 × 105 bacterial cells per gram wet weight of plant root tissue. The identified strain with the specified characteristics of (i) colonizing ability and (ii) N produced per microorganism per hour is used in a method to increase nitrogen fixation in non-legume plants in the field, to colonize a non-legume crop, to obtain a composition for increasing the yield of a non-legume crop.

EFFECT: invention provides an increase in nitrogen fixation in non-legume plants.
