SUBSTANCE: invention relates to video encoding tools. A first syntax element is received in the encoded bit video stream, wherein the first syntax element indicates the maximum permissible number of candidates for merging in the set of encoding blocks in the encoded bit video stream. The maximum permissible number of the triangular prediction mode (TPM) candidates for the set of encoding blocks is set based on the second syntax element if a second syntax element has been received, otherwise the maximum permissible number of TPM candidates is set based on the first syntax element. If the current encoding block in the set of encoding blocks is encoded in the triangular prediction mode, a list of triangular prediction candidates is built for the current encoding block based on a certain number of TPM candidates, wherein said number of TPM candidates in the list of triangular prediction candidates is less than or equal to the maximum permissible number of TPM candidates.
EFFECT: increased efficiency of video decoding.
