SUBSTANCE: invention relates to video encoding tools. A flag is retrieved from the sequence parameter set (SPS) referenced by the encoded image, indicating whether information on the size and partitioning of the image is included in said SPS for the encoded image. If the fact that the flag indicates that information on the size and partitioning of the image is included in the SPS is determined, information on the size and partitioning of the image is retrieved from said SPS. If the fact that the flag indicates that information on the size and partitioning of the image is not included in the SPS is determined, information on the size and partitioning of the image is retrieved from the video parameter set (VPS). The number of information on the size and partitioning of the image included in the SPS is retrieved from said SPS. The fact whether the indicator is less than or equal to the retrieved number of information on the size and partitioning of the image included in said SPS is determined. If the fact that the indicator is less than or equal to the number of information on the size and partitioning of the image included in said SPS is determined, the indicator is increased.
