SUBSTANCE: invention relates to biotechnology and zootechnics and can be used for breeding purposes. The method for selecting calves with a high potential for live weight gain includes a biochemical blood test and a study of alkaline phosphatase activity. At the same time, venous blood is taken from calves on the 1-14th day after birth, and alkaline phosphatase activity and the concentration of magnesium and calcium are used as a marker. After determining the activity of the enzyme and the concentration of calcium and magnesium in the blood, the prediction coefficient is determined by the formula: , where ALP is the activity of alkaline phosphatase, U/l; Ca is calcium concentration, mmol/l; Mg is concentration of magnesium, mmol/l. Then, the rate of live weight gain of calves is judged by the coefficient indicators, after which calves with lower coefficient indicators are selected and a high potential for live weight gain is predicted.

EFFECT: invention allows early prediction of live weight growth rates in young cattle for breeding selection and more accurate selection of calves with the desired phenotype, which in turn allows to reduce costs through early culling of young animals with unsatisfactory economic and useful traits.
