A cartridge for use in an aerosol generating system comprises: the first compartment containing an alkaloid source, wherein the alkaloid source contains an alkaloid-based liquid composition having a polyhydric alcohol content of 10 to 40 weight percent and an alkaloid content of 10 to 90 weight percent; and a second compartment containing the acid source. The aerosol generating system contains said cartridge and an aerosol generating device comprising: a housing forming a device cavity configured to accommodate at least a portion of the cartridge; and a heating element for heating the first compartment and the second compartment of the cartridge.
