FIELD: chemical industry.

SUBSTANCE: invention is related to a method for producing ethyl propionate used as a solvent in the paint industry and in organic synthesis. The method is carried out in an ethanol medium using ethylene and carbon monoxide and is characterized in that pyridine and dicobalt octacarbonyl are additionally added to the reaction mixture as a catalyst, carbon monoxide and ethylene are fed into the reactor in such a way that the partial pressure of ethylene is 1.6-2.5 MPa, and for carbon monoxide it is 7.5-8.4 MPa, followed by heating the reactor to a temperature of 140°C and keeping the reaction mixture for 3-15 min, cooling, relieving excess pressure and isolating ethyl propionate.

EFFECT: increase of efficiency of the method for producing ethyl propionate due to the selectivity of the main reaction of 91-98% and the conversion rate of ethylene of 95-99%.
