SUBSTANCE: invention represents compositions and methods for more efficient production of steviol glycosides in the host cell. In some embodiments, the host cell is genetically modified to contain a heterologous nucleotide sequence encoding Pisum sativum kaurene oxidase or a kaurene oxidase variant. In some embodiments, the host cell also contains one or more heterologous nucleotide sequences encoding pathway enzymes capable of producing steviol glycosides in the host cell.
EFFECT: compositions and methods described herein form an efficient method for the heterologous production of steviol glycosides, including but not limited to rebaudioside D and rebaudioside M.
