SUBSTANCE: group of inventions can be used for therapeutic or prophylactic treatment of a disorder associated with a violation of the intestinal microbiome in a patient. The following is proposed: the use of rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) polysaccharides in the preparation of a prebiotic composition for the therapeutic or prophylactic treatment of diseases selected from the following: overweight, obesity, insulin resistance and dysfunction of the intestinal barrier, where the composition includes at least 0.1 wt.% dry matter of RG-I polysaccharides derived from fruit, carrot, pea, chicory, sugar beet, okra, or combinations thereof, wherein said RG-I polysaccharides have a molecular weight greater than 15 kDa and have a backbone consisting of galacturonic acid residues and rhamnose residues, the said residues rhamnose is contained in the residues of alpha(1→4)-galacturonic-alpha(1→2)-rhamnose, where the molar ratio of galacturonic acid residues and rhamnose residues in RG-I polysaccharides is in the range of 20:1–1:1. A synbiotic composition is also proposed, comprising at least 0.1 wt.% of the dry matter of the indicated rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I) polysaccharides and 10⁴-10¹⁰ CFU/g Akkermansia muciniophila and/or 10⁶-10¹⁰ CFU/g Bifidobacterium spp.

EFFECT: enteric fermentation of RG-I polysaccharides produces beneficial short-chain fatty acids, reduces gas production, and stimulates the growth or activity of beneficial bacteria.
