FIELD: polymers.
SUSBTANCE: group of inventions relates to a heterophasic polyolefin composition having an increased melt flow rate and high impact strength, as well as to a method for producing such a composition. Described is a heterophasic polymer composition having improved impact strength and intended for the manufacture of an article, wherein the heterophasic polymer composition contains: (a) a propylene polymer phase containing propylene polymers selected from the group consisting of polypropylene homopolymers and propylene copolymers and up to 50 wt.% one or more comonomers selected from the group consisting of ethylene and C4-C10-α -olefin monomers, wherein the content of propylene in the propylene polymer phase is 80 wt.% or more, (b) an ethylene polymer phase containing ethylene polymers selected from the group consisting of copolymers of ethylene and one or more C3-C10-αα-olefin monomers, wherein the content of ethylene in the ethylene polymer phase is from 8 to 90% by weight; and (c) a compatibilizer containing a fulvene moiety, wherein the compatibilizer is a compound of formula (EX)
(EX),
wherein R301, R302, R303 and R304 are each hydrogen, R311 and R312 are each phenyl, and (d) a nucleating agent selected from the group consisting of (i) benzoate anion containing nucleating agents, (ii) nucleating agents, containing 2,2'-methylene-bis-(4,6-di-tert-butylphenyl)phosphate anions, (iii) nucleating substances containing cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate anions, and (iv) nucleating substances containing bicyclo[ 2.2.1]heptane-2,3-dicarboxylate anions. A method for modifying a heterophasic polymer composition is also described, including the steps of mixing a compatibilizer, a nucleating agent, and a heterophasic polymer composition, generating free radicals in a propylene polymer phase and an ethylene polymer phase, whereby at least a portion of the compatibilizer containing a fulvene moiety reacts with free radicals both in the propylene polymer phase and in the ethylene polymer phase to form a bond with the propylene polymer in the propylene polymer phase and a bond with the ethylene polymer in the ethylene polymer phase.
EFFECT: providing a polymer composition having an increased melt flow rate, while maintaining and even increasing the impact load resistance of the polymer.
