FIELD: carbon electrodes.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a mixed composition for the production of a carbon electrode containing a mixture of petroleum coke and pyrolytic carbon, and a method for its preparation, an electrode composition containing the specified composition and a method for its preparation, a carbon electrode containing the specified composition and suitable for use as an anode in an aluminium electrolytic cell, and a method for producing it, as well as a method for producing aluminium using the specified carbon electrode. The mixed composition contains a mixture of (i) petroleum coke in an amount of 20 to 99 wt.% and (ii) pyrolytic carbon in an amount of 1 to 80 wt.% based on the total weight of the mixed composition. Moreover, the mixed composition contains at least two particle size fractions: (i) granular more than 0.5 mm and (ii) finely dispersed below 0.5 mm, where pyrolytic carbon is present at least in the granular size fraction.

EFFECT: improving the mechanical and chemical properties of the anode to minimize carbon consumption.
