FIELD: location determination systems.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to measuring distance through wireless communication between devices based on the time of arrival of the measurement message. To increase the reliability of distance measurement based on arrival time, the device is configured to determine a first distance in accordance with a ranging protocol using a measurement message from the second device. The communicating device (130) has a directional antenna (133) and is located at a reliable distance (150) and shares a connection direction (160) with the first device. The communicating device determines a third direction of the same measurement message and transmits support data to the first device based on the third direction. The first device first determines a first angle (161) between the first direction and the connection direction and determines a third angle (163) between the third direction and the connection direction using the support data. A verification test is then performed at the first distance (151), the valid distance (150), the first angle and the third angle. The first distance is reliable when the specified distances and angles correspond to an acceptable spatial population (100) of devices.

EFFECT: increase in the reliability of distance measurement based on arrival time.
