SUBSTANCE: invention can be used for turning cylindrical parts in large-scale and mass production. The method of setting up a lathe for turning a part includes selecting a reference cutter with an average cutting ability, establishing a reference cutting mode when turning a part with this cutter, and subsequent processing of a batch of parts with working cutters at the specified cutting mode with the possibility of changing it. The highest cutting speed is selected as a reference while ensuring the specified processing length and part diameter within their tolerance. The resulting part profile is used as a standard when turning a batch of parts with working cutters, the diameter of which is measured during the turning process. In case of diameter deviation, the cutting speed is changed, while the change in cutting speed is limited to the value at which the wear rate of the cutter takes on a minimum value, a segment is selected from the beginning of the processing length, after turning which and during further turning in the case of obtaining a diametrical size equal to the reference one and cutting speed, ensuring minimal wear of the cutter. Turning to the end of processing to compensate for the wear of the cutter is carried out with its movement perpendicular to the axis of the part.

EFFECT: increases the reliability of the machine when turning the diameter of a part within the tolerance limits for a given processing length.
