SUBSTANCE: invention is related to creating pipe wrenches, in particular to adjustable pipe wrenches of the angular type, used in industry, housing and communal services, equipment repair and other areas for working in hard-to-reach places and mainly with round-shaped elements, as well as with nuts and parts of other cross-sectional shapes. The pipe wrench contains a body with at least one guide, on which a movable jaw is placed with the ability to move along the guide to set the jaw size, as well as a base part, connected on a hinge to the body and including a main handle and a fixed jaw. In this case, the movable jaw is made with the possibility of self-braking when it moves along the guide in the direction of increasing the size of the pharynx when force is applied to the movable jaw in the jaw area by means of at least one locking element included in its composition, placed on the guide, while the end part of the locking element protrudes from the centre line of the guide towards the jaw by an amount S exceeding the distance L from the centre line of the guide to the border of the mouth at the base of the body, and the locking element satisfies the condition of self-braking when a force is applied to it in the direction of increasing the size of the mouth at a distance from L to S from the centre line guide: b≤2⋅L⋅μ/k_z, mm, where b is the distance between the extreme points of contact of the locking element with the guide in its longitudinal direction when force is applied to the locking element in the direction of increasing the size of the jaw, mm; L is the distance between the centre line of the guide and the boundary of the jaw at the base of the body, mm; μ - coefficient of dry static friction of the locking element on the guide; k_z - design safety factor, the value of which is greater than one.
