SUBSTANCE: invention is related to creating adjustable wrenches with quick adjustment of the jaw size for screwing and unscrewing bolts, nuts and rotating parts with flats. The adjustable wrench contains a base part with a fixed jaw, at least one guide and with a main handle, as well as a movable jaw. The movable jaw is made with the possibility of self-braking when it moves along the guide in the direction of increasing the size of the pharynx when force is applied to the movable jaw in the jaws area by means of at least one locking element included in its composition, placed on the guide, while the end part of the locking element protrudes from the axial guide line towards the jaws by an amount S greater than the distance L from the centre line of the guide to the border of the mouth at the base of the fixed jaw, and the locking element satisfies the condition of self-braking when a force is applied to it in the direction of increasing the size of the mouth at a distance from L to S from the centre line of the guide :b≤2⋅L⋅μ/K_z, mm, where b is the distance between the extreme points of contact of the locking element with the guide in its longitudinal direction when force is applied to the locking element in the direction of increasing the size of the jaws, mm; L is the distance between the centre line of the guide and the boundary of the jaws at the base of the fixed jaw, mm;μ - coefficient of sliding friction of the locking element on the guide; K_z - design safety factor, the value of which is greater than one, and the kinematic connection of the auxiliary handle with the movable jaw is made at a distance from the centre line of the guide, less than the distance L.

EFFECT: increasing the maximum tightening torque of the nuts, reducing the total load on the user's hand and its muscle fatigue, as well as increasing the convenience of using the key in terms of adjusting the size of the jaws of the key by changing the compression force on the key handles.
