SUBSTANCE: diffractive five-focal intraocular lens contains basic optics and a diffractive element. The base optic has a base curvature that corresponds to the base power. The diffractive element provides constructive interference in at least five successive diffraction orders to create a series of five focal points for vision ranging from near vision to far vision. Constructive interference provides a near focal point at the highest diffraction order of five successive diffraction orders, a far focal point at the lowest diffraction order, and three intermediate diffraction orders between the highest and lowest diffraction orders to provide continuity of vision from near vision to far vision distance with extended intermediate, intermediate and extended near focal points.
EFFECT: multifocal intraocular lens (i) provides 100% diffraction efficiency, (ii) creates almost no positive optical interference, (iii) can also reduce longitudinal chromatic aberration.
