FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to medicine, namely to surgery, and can be used to determine replacement of muscle tissue with fat tissue in patients with morbid obesity according to computed tomography. Non-contrast computed tomography is performed, density and area of sternocleidomastoid muscle is measured on both sides on a transverse section at the level of the second cervical vertebra, aligned along the muscle axis. Then the sarcopenia index is calculated by the formula: sarcopenia index = (ρ muscle ⋅ S muscles ⋅ h) / m, where: ρ muscles — average density of muscle tissue on both sides, S muscle — average area of muscle tissue on both sides, h — patient's height, m — body mass. If the sarcopenia index is less than or equal to 15, sarcopenia is diagnosed.

EFFECT: use of the invention provides higher diagnostic accuracy by taking into account the density of muscle tissue, as well as reducing the number of variables presented in the form of selecting the area of muscle massifs.
