SUBSTANCE: invention is used to assess the degree of contamination and concentration of heavy metals in natural water and waste water using biotesting methods, namely winter wheat (Triticum aestivum). Method for assessing phytotoxicity of water using winter wheat sprouts involves sampling water in amount of 1–2 l in cleaned polyethylene bottles with a screw cap, after which 20 Petri dishes are taken, a layer of absorbent cotton is placed in them, from above with tweezers on cotton wool are laid out seeds of test object of winter wheat variety lutescens with germ upwards and covered with two layers of filter paper, then Petri dishes with embryos are poured with 20 ml of selected water and covered with a light-reflecting film for growing seeds and maintained +25–26 °C for germination of winter wheat germs, after germination, winter wheat is placed in mini-cassettes with volume of 150 g, filled with 140 g of washed and hot sand. Each mini-cassette is poured with 10 ml of collected water samples 3 times during a week. Evaluation of sprouts is carried out in a week, counting all normally germinated seeds, not sprouted, rotten, defective and less than 3 cm: a sprout is considered to be normally germinated if coleoptile is 3 cm and more and if there are two or three roots not less than 5 cm. When the sprouts reach height of 8–10 cm, they are dug up, dried with filter paper, divided into stems and roots, measured and weighed.

EFFECT: improved method of biotesting, detection of dependence of development of winter wheat seedlings on phytotoxicity of natural waters, as well as assessment of its seasonal dynamism.
