FIELD: animal breeding.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of animal breeding, in particular to dairy cattle breeding, and can be used as a method for estimation of the index of food activity of cows in conditions of industrial technologies. Method involves keeping, feeding and milking cows, accounting for elementary acts of behaviour by time spent on fodder consumption and chewing activity per day. With time spent on fodder consumption and chewing activity, daily milk yield is used as an estimate, wherein the food activity index is defined as the ratio of daily milk yield to the sum of time spent on fodder consumption and chewing activity (rumination); after evaluating each animal by the index of food activity, finding the arithmetic mean value and the mean square deviation of this indicator for the group of evaluated animals, if the food activity index is more than the arithmetic mean value for the evaluated group by 0.5 sigma (M + 0.5σ), is referred to animals with high index of food activity, less than the arithmetic mean value for the evaluated group by 0.5 sigma (M – 0.5σ) – with low index of food activity, with intermediate value – with average index of food activity, where M is the arithmetic mean value of the indicator; σ is the mean square deviation of the indicator.

EFFECT: invention makes it possible to increase objectivity and efficiency of the method for evaluation of cows by index of food activity.
