FIELD: animal breeding.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to animal breeding and can be used in selection of highly productive cows. Animals are ranked annually in a herd of first-calf cows in the second month of lactation using a selection index which takes into account the range of variability of udder volume, udder volume decay and intensity of milk flow. Higher the selection index (measured in points from 0 to 100), the higher the rank of the first-calf cow by the level of milk production. After ranking among first-calf cows, animals with the highest selection index are selected in order to replace the most low-productive cows rejected from the dairy herd.

EFFECT: use of the invention will make it possible to increase efficiency of selection of first-calf cows successfully combining high milk yield with adaptability to machine milking.
