FIELD: processing of materials by cutting.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to machining, particularly, to cutting tool surface modification to increase its wear resistance in machining heat-resistant chromium-nickel alloys. Cutting tool surface layer modification method includes stages of working surfaces cleaning, application on them of nanostructured wear-resistant coating based on titanium and aluminium and exposure to laser beam on these surfaces. Tool material is selected from a group of single-carbide hard alloys, after applying a nanostructured wear-resistant coating based on titanium and aluminium, a TiB2 coating is additionally applied on top, surface is processed with laser beam coatings selectively in the form of single strips perpendicular to cutting edge. Width of strips is selected equal to diameter of laser beam, distance between them is selected on basis of 2-3 diameters of laser beam, and density of laser radiation energy is selected equal to 80–100 J/cm2.
EFFECT: improved physical and mechanical properties of the cutting tool.
