SUBSTANCE: group of inventions refers to medicine, namely to compositions for preventing or treating symptoms associated with a gastrointestinal disorder. Disclosed is a composition for preventing or treating symptoms associated with a gastrointestinal disorder, comprising bacterial species that are purified, and wherein the bacterial species include at least one short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) producing bacterial species, and at least one SCFA-metabolising bacterial species, where when the composition is cultured in an acidic medium at pH 6–8 and conditions with low oxygen content of up to 8 g/l, at least one SCFA-producing bacterial species is present in an amount, sufficient to provide an amount of SCFA sufficient to maintain the growth of at least one SCFA-metabolizing bacteria. Composition for preventing or treating symptoms associated with a gastrointestinal disorder, containing types of bacteria, which are purified and are in suspension, is characterized by the above composition. Composition for preventing or treating symptoms associated with a gastrointestinal disorder differs from the above in that it is in powder form.
