SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method for preventing and/or treating infections and/or inflammations of the lower respiratory tract and/or ear in an infant or a young child, wherein the method involves administering to an infant or young child a nutritional composition containing 2'-fucosylactose (2'-FL) as a single fucosylated oligosaccharide and lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT) as the only N-acetylated oligosaccharide, wherein 2'-FL is present in a total amount of 0.75–1.65 g/l of the composition and/or in a total amount of 0.52–1.15 g/100 g of the composition in terms of dry weight; and LNnT is present in a total amount of 0.45–0.85 g/l of the composition and/or in a total amount of 0.31–0.59 g/100 g of the composition based on the dry weight; wherein composition does not contain sialylated oligosaccharide(s), and wherein infections and/or inflammations of the lower respiratory tract and/or ear are selected from the group consisting of pneumonia, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, otitis media, otitis media and combinations thereof.

EFFECT: present invention provides a synergetic effect of 2'-fucosyllactose and lacto-N-neotetraose when used to prevent and/or treat infections and/or inflammations of the lower respiratory tract and/or ear in an infant or a young child.
