SUBSTANCE: invention relates to image processing and, in particular, to encoding depth data for encoding and decoding immersive video. Disclosed is a method of encoding and decoding depth data, where in the encoding method both depth values and occupancy data are encoded to obtain a depth map. Method adapts the procedure for converting depth values and occupancy data into map values in a depth map. For example, it can adaptively select a threshold, above or below which all values represent unoccupied pixels. By adapting the order of coding depth and occupancy based on analysis of depth values, the method can enable more efficient coding and transmission of depth data and occupancy data. Metadata defining adaptive coding are obtained at the output of the encoding method. This metadata can be used by a corresponding decoding method to decode map values. Also disclosed is an encoder and a decoder for depth data and a corresponding binary stream containing a depth map and associated metadata.
EFFECT: high efficiency of encoding depth data.
