SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of coal-based active coals and can be used in electric coal, graphite and coke-chemical industry. Method involves impregnation of coal with an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide, drying and thermal treatment. Coal with grain size of 3–5 mm, containing 35–48 wt.% of volatile substances, impregnated with 30 wt.% KOH solution with mass ratio of coal: KOH equal to 1:(0.8–1.2), held for 20–25 hours at room temperature. Then heat treated at temperature of 850–900 °C, then successively washed with concentrated sulfuric acid and distilled water to neutral pH of the washing solution, then dried at temperature of 100–110 °C for 2.0–2.5 hours.
EFFECT: high adsorption activity of the obtained active carbon when extracting phenol from water.
