SUBSTANCE: invention relates to lidar systems and methods of calibrating lidar systems. Lidar system comprises a light source, a scanning unit and a detection unit. Scanning unit comprises a first reflecting element for redirecting a light beam from a light source, a second reflecting element for redirecting the light beam from the first reflecting element into the surrounding space and an adjustment mechanism for adjusting the position of the first reflecting element relative to the second reflecting element in two degrees of freedom. Method includes emitting a light beam in the direction of a first reflecting element, moving the first and second reflecting elements to positions from the first and second plurality of positions, respectively, detecting a self-reflected beam and adjusting the position of the first reflecting element relative to the second reflecting element by at least one of two degrees of freedom in response to detection of the self-reflected beam.
EFFECT: high accuracy of determining points formed by a lidar system.
