FIELD: computer engineering.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering, in particular to an ion source with a field-emission cathode. Ion source with a field-emission cathode for use in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer consists of cathode electrode 1 with field-emission cathode 2 applied thereon, anode 3 and a focusing electrode, wherein the ion source is mounted on the base of electron gun 5, to which the fastening base of ion accelerator 8 is attached, wherein field-emission cathode 2 is an array of carbon nanotubes and has the shape of an elongated parallelogram.

EFFECT: reduction of intrinsic "background" (gas release), id est intrinsic contribution to the residual pressure of the mass spectrometer during operation of the source.
