FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metallurgy, namely to aluminothermic mixture and method of its preparation, and can be used for welding of rails by method of intermediate casting. Method of preparing an aluminothermic reaction mixture for welding railway rails by intermediate casting involves mixing in a stoichiometric ratio of iron oxides in form of scale, aluminium metal as a reducing agent, filler and alloying additives in form of ferroalloys, wherein prior to mixing, scale is modified with air blowing in calcination zone to stabilize bonded-dispersed structured system by evacuation in elastic airtight package. As an alloying additive, the mixture additionally contains carbon in the form of graphite, and as a filler, the mixture contains balls with diameter of 1.8 mm from pure iron with an iron content of not less than 98%, when modifying scale, simultaneously with air blowing, superheated water vapour is continuously supplied and an aluminothermic reaction mixture is obtained with an oxidation degree of ferrous iron FeO into trivalent iron Fe2O3 of not less than 75%, ingredients of which have the same granulometric composition with a branched structure, wherein the bulk density of the aluminothermic mixture does not exceed 2.3 kg/dm3.

EFFECT: higher strength of weld seam due to increased oxygen balance of scale for aluminothermic reaction mixture and increased calorific capacity of aluminothermic reaction mixture.
