FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry, specifically to technology of 2-phenoxyethanol, which is widely used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry, as well as an ink component and a reagent in organic synthesis. Disclosed is a method of producing 2-phenoxyethanol, characterized by that ethylene glycol is treated with diphenyl carbonate in molar ratio of 1:(0.5-1.5) in the presence of decane and sodium metal while boiling with a Dean-Stark attachment, followed by fractional distillation at reduced pressure.
EFFECT: providing a simple and effective method of producing the end product using minimum amounts of commercially available reagents.
