FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a composition for breaking down and killing bacteria in a biofilm and preventing biofilm formation comprising a first component selected from a group consisting of chitosan, chitin, chitosan derivatives, chitin derivatives and any combination thereof; at least one tribasic acid and at least one solubilising acid, where the tribasic acid is present in an amount of at least 10 wt.% of the amount of the first component and where the tribasic acid is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, phosphoric acid or mixtures thereof, and the solubilising acid is present in amount of 2–50 wt.% of the amount of the first component and is selected from the group consisting of lactic acid, formic acid, acetic acid, succinic acid, hydrochloric acid and mixtures thereof, also relates to a wound dressing comprising a composition and to a method for preparing a composition for destruction and killing bacteria in the biofilm and preventing the formation of a biofilm comprising a first component selected from a group consisting of chitosan, chitin, chitosan derivatives, chitin derivatives and combinations thereof; at least one tribasic acid and at least one solubilising acid, where the tribasic acid is present in an amount of at least 10 wt.% of the amount of the first component and where the tribasic acid is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, phosphoric acid or mixtures thereof, and the solubilising acid is present in amount of 2–50 wt.% of the amount of the first component and is selected from the group consisting of lactic acid, formic acid, acetic acid, succinic acid, hydrochloric acid and mixtures thereof; where the method includes the following steps: a) coating at least a portion of the first component with a mixture comprising at least one tribasic acid and at least one solubilising acid; and/or b) absorption in at least a portion of a first component of a mixture comprising at least one tribasic acid and at least one solubilising acid.
EFFECT: present invention provides a composition which demonstrates improved antimicrobial efficacy in breaking down and killing bacteria in a biofilm and preventing biofilm formation.
