FIELD: medical science.

SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, namely to ophthalmology, and aims at improving visual functions and functional retinal activity in the patients with dry age-related macular degeneration. In patients with dry age-related macular degeneration, fractal phototherapy is performed with presenting to the patient in a stereoscopic head-mounted display of homogeneous nonlinear fractal flickers, specified according to the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot function in the form of a virtual fractally flickering canvas with the flickering object maximum transparency, placed in the context of the pseudo-volumetric scene. Following parameters and an optical stimulation algorithm are used: Hausdorff-Besikovitch fractal dimension D=1.4, at the first self-similarity level, a fluctuation pattern of a random signal in range of 9.5-11.0 Hz, a self-similarity coefficient of 2.5. Therapeutic course is 7-14 procedures, 1 session day from 8:30 to 11:00, the length of one session is 15-30 minutes. 7-10 sessions are followed by electroretinography, and if observing an increase of photopic ganzfeld ERG wave amplitude by 15% or more as compared to a reference value, the phototherapeutic course is continued to 12-14 sessions. Course may be repeated in 3-6 months with the number of sessions showing a positive effect on visual acuity or ERG amplitude in the first course.

EFFECT: invention provides preventing the negative consequences with regard to the retinal photoreceptor function in the process of fractal phototherapy with simultaneous preservation of the positive effect.
