FIELD: organic chemistry and technology. SUBSTANCE: method of synthesis of 3-methylpentanediol-1,5 involves hydrogenation of 4-methyl-4- -hydroxyethyl-1,3-dioxane or its technical fraction at 220-300 C, under increased pressure in the presence of copper-chrome-containing catalyst followed by isolation of the end substance by rectification. Process is carried out in the presence of copper-zinc-chrome-barium catalyst of the following composition, wt. -%: CuO 76.0-81.1; Cr2O3 8.8-14.6; BaO 0.6-2.3, and ZnO 6.7-14.5 under pressure 50-300 atm. EFFECT: enhanced selectivity of process, increased yield of the end substance.
