SUBSTANCE: preparation of substituted aromatic nitriles of the formula I: R-(A′-Z′)_m-(A″-Z″)_n-Ar-CN wherein R is halogen, CN, an C₁-C₁₅ alkyl residue; in these residues one or more methylene groups independently of each other may be substituted with oxygen, sulfur or carbonyl so that sulfur and/or oxygen are not combined together; A′, A″ are independent of each other and represent a trans-1,4-cyclohexyl residue; Z′, Z″ represent a single bond; Ar is a 1,4 phenylene residue, is carried out by passing gaseous ammonia through a melt of the corresponding aromatic carboxylic acid in which a catalyst is suspended and the resulting reaction water is removed with excess ammonia.
