SUBSTANCE: hinges 3 are installed in the armor member, using ceramic layer 1 on backing 2, on the edges of ceramic layer 1; stiffness of backing 2 varies from the center to the edges: the minimum stiffness is in the center, and the maximum one is in the zone of hinges 2. At such a design, in the initial moment of bullet action on ceramic layer 1, the central part of backing 2 gets involved in motion transferring part of force to the more stiff part of the backing, closer to its edges, which turn on hinges 3 and transfer the above force to ceramics, preventing premature destruction of backing 2. Ceramic layer 1 may have residual stresses, and backing 2 may be laminar. Ceramic layer 1 and backing 2 may be enclosed in thin impact elastic shell 4, and backing 2 may be installed on soft pad 5.
