MAGNESIUM ELECTROLYZER WITH DIRECTED ELECTROLYTE CIRCULATION Russian patent published in 1997 - IPC

Abstract RU 2095482 C1

FIELD: electrolytic metal production. SUBSTANCE: directed circulation of electrolyte excludes arising dead zones in working space of magnesium electrolyzer, which ensures stability in electrolyzer operation and higher current concentration in the regions outlying from magnesium accumulation compartment. According to invention, cathode has supporting protrusion on the side of lining; cathode screen is equal to height of cathode with supporting protrusions, height of cathode and cathode screens being 1.05-1.4 times greater than that of cathodes located near magnesium accumulation compartment, and/or interpolar distance increases in direction toward partition between electrolyzer compartments by a factor of 1.5 to 3. To impart rigidity to cathode screens, they are supported by above-mentioned protrusions located above upper cut of cathode sheet. Cathodes may have grooves directed with their angle downward to upper face of cathode sheet and overlapping up to 75% of interpolar distance. Overflow passage in the partition is trapezoidally shaped, its lower face being located at the level of upper face of cathode and ratio of overflow passage height on the side of electrolytic compartment to that on the side of magnesium accumulation compartment ranging from 2:1 to 3:1. EFFECT: increased reliability of operation. 9 cl, 3 dwg
