FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy, namely apparatuses for producing magnesium with use of electrolysis of melt salts.

SUBSTANCE: electrolyzer includes casing, lining, electrolysis compartment through bottom of which anode and cathode are inserted. One part of cathode is arranged in lining of lateral wall, its other part is arranged in electrolysis compartment. Electrolyzer also includes built-up cell separated from electrolysis compartment by means of dividing partition having upper and lower overflow ducts; and electric current leads. Cathode screen is rigidly mounted on cathode, it divides cathode by two portions and it is arranged close to lining in electrolysis compartment. Cathode is removable one. Part of cathode that is arranged in lining of lateral wall of electrolyzer has stepped upper zone and straight lower zone. Part of cathode that is arranged in electrolysis compartment has mutually parallel chamfers in upper portion of cathode at side of overflow duct of said partition and in lower portion of cathode at side of cathode screen. Relation of width of cathode part arranged in lining to width of cathode part arranged in electrolysis compartment is in range 1 : (1.5 - 1.8). Relation of anode part arranged over cathode to height of cathode is in range 1 : (3.5 - 4.0).

EFFECT: lowered specific consumption of energy, shortened starting period.
