FIELD: hydrocarbon fuel consumption in boiler furnaces and industrial furnaces. SUBSTANCE: method involves ion current measurement in fireball and fuel feed control. Ion currents are measured and compared in three fireball zones: ignition zone, burn-out zone, and fuel combustion completion zone; with current in ignition zone higher than that in burn-out zone, fuel flow is increased and with current in burn-out zone lower than in combustion completion zone fuel flow is reduced. Ionization sensor implementing this method has isolated electrodes, sensor case being used as one of them (positive electrode). Case has annular splits receiving annular negative electrodes. Surface areas of negative electrodes are equal and, respectively, positive-electrode-case areas of side surfaces in splits receiving negative electrodes are equal.
