FIELD: chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of direct oxidation of H2S containing in gas at small concentration to sulfur by CATALYTIC method. Gas containing H2S is treated with gas containing free oxygen at contact with catalyst of selective oxidation of H2S to sulfur. Gas has free oxygen at amount providing the preparing molar ratio O2 : H2S from 0.05 to 10. The catalyst consists of the catalytically active phase bound with a carrier. An active phase has metal as metal compound and/or elemental state and a carrier consists of silicon carbide and its content is at least 40 weight % of the catalyst weight.
