SUBSTANCE: proposed display panel has geometry of its electrodes and air gaps, as well as gas filling chosen to ensure surface discharge in picture element between two extreme parallel electrodes above address electrode placed between them; proposed control technique includes shaping of discharge-supporting pulses only across extreme parallel electrodes of picture element in which case external circuits of address and control electrodes are held in high-impedance state.
