FIELD: gas treatment. SUBSTANCE: hydrogen stream from stage A is brought into contact, at 5 to 50 C, with one or more beds of granular material containing nickel and/or nickel compounds, at least 1 wt % of total nickel amount being present in reduced form until easily removable fractions are completely removed. In stage B, stream coming out of stage A, being essentially free of more easily removable fractions but yet containing difficultly removable impurities, is brought into contact with one or more beds of nonvolatile gas-absorbing material at higher temperature. Method is accomplished in apparatus containing hydrogen stream inlet communicating over pipelines with primary purification chambers; valves allowing alternate openings and closings for passage of impurities-containing hydrogen through the first and second primary purification chambers enclosing nickel-on-carrier-based granular material; final purification chamber communicating over pipelines with primary purification chambers; and valves regulating partially purified hydrogen stream from either primary purification chamber. Such structure enables regeneration of nickel in one of the chambers, whereas the other chamber is operated and final purification chamber contains bed of nonvolatile material. EFFECT: improved purification degree. 19 cl, 3 dwg, 1 tbl, 16 ex
