FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy, specifically, production of magnesium and chlorine by electrolysis of molten chlorides. SUBSTANCE: in agreement with invention treatment of electrodes is conducted with application of anode potential on graphite in two consistent stages: impregnation in melt of metaphosphates, treatment in melt of chlorides with application of anode potential. EFFECT: prolonged service life of electrodes and electrolyzer, reduced consumption of material and energy in process of production of magnesium and chlorine. 2 cl
