FIELD: electrolytic production of magnesium and chlorine. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of charging melt metal chlorides, applying to electrodes current from direct current source and electrolysis for producing magnesium and chlorine at predetermined electric current density. Novelty is increased density of electric current applied to electrodes at time period of starting electrolysis with lowered values of process parameters. Electric current density is increased higher than predetermined value due to connection of additional direct current source, de-energizing several electrodes and continuously removing excess heat. Electric current density is sustained by 10-25% more than its predetermined value in electrolyzer. EFFECT: reduced starting and tuning period with lowered values of parameters, increased magnesium yield in dependence upon electric current, enhanced efficiency of electrolyzer, lowered specific electric energy consumption at operation of electrolyzer. 2 cl, 1 ex
