FIELD: measurement technology; mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: high voltage is applied between surface of part which serves as anode and cathode. Width of frequency spectrum of discharge alternating-current component is measured by level of 0.2-0.5 of operating voltage. Roughness of surface is determined by formula Ra= k•f+Ro, where Ra is surface roughness; k is proportionality coefficient; f is measured spectrum width; Ro is empirical parameter. Values k and Ro are calculated by calibration curve of roughness dependence from spectrum width. Method allows determination of part surface roughness directly in process of part machining.
