FIELD: rails made from perlitic steel featuring considerably improved wear resistance and weldability and meeting requirements of main railroads, and processes of rail production. SUBSTANCE: rail steel contains, wt.%: C 0.85-1.20; Si 0.10-1.00; Mn 0.20-1.50; Cr 0.50-1.00; or contains C 0.85-1.20; Si 0.40-1.00; Mn 0.20-0.40; Cr 0.35-0.50. In this case, total content of Si/4+Mn/2+Cr ranges from 0.8 to 1.8 wt.%. Rail steel contains one or, at least, two elements taken from group including Mo, V, Nb and B, the balance iron and inevitable impurities. Steel rails has perlitic structure to depth of, at least, 20 mm from angle and upper surface of rail head as initial point. Perlitic structure features Vickers hardness of, at least, 320, and difference between Vickers hardness of main metal and metal of welded joint does not exceed 30 to prevent wear depression resulted from local wear of rail upper part in point of weld without affecting its weldability. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 7 cl, 12 dwg, 16 tbl
