FIELD: sorption technology, more particularly preparation of active carbons used for cleaning gases and liquids from harmful impurities and toxicants and also for other industrial and nature-protecting purposes. SUBSTANCE: described is method of preparing activated granular carbon which comprises mixing crushed coal stock at 30-60 C, adding octamethyl cyclotetrasiloxane in amount of 0.5- 3.0 wt.% and resin binder, granulating the mixture at 60- 100 C and at pressure of 80-100 kg/sq.cm, cooling the granules to room temperature, carbonizing the granules, first at heating rate of 10-25 C/min for 12-24 and then at heating rate of 2-5 C/min to 450-650 C and activating said granules to total pore volume of 0.6-0.9 cubic/g. The claimed method makes it possible to increase significantly mechanical strength of activated granular carbon having high adsorption power with respect to iodine.
