FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy, namely apparatuses for producing magnesium by electrolysis of melt salts. SUBSTANCE: electrolyzer for producing magnesium and chlorine may operate with different raw materials, namely with pure magnesium chloride and with raw material containing 90% of magnesium chloride. Electrolyzer includes electrolysis compartment in which are alternatively mounted: anodes with upper inlets and cathodes; buildup cell separated from electrolysis compartment by dividing partition with bypassing V-shaped duct. Novelty is value of distance between cathode upper end until lower edge of V-shaped duct consisting 0.16-0.25 of cathode height and also value of distance from electrolyzer bottom until lower edge of cathode exceeding by 1.3-1.5 times distance between anode lower end until bottom of electrolyzer.
