FIELD: oxidation catalysts. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for preparing catalysts for treating industrial emission gases to remove sulfur compounds, in particular to oxidizing hydrogen sulfide and organic sulfur compounds present in Claus process tailing gases into sulfur dioxide. Catalysts are prepared using aluminum hydroxide-based binder followed by mixing with pore-forming additives and vanadium and iron compounds, after which material is molded, dried, and calcined, said binder being based on X-ray-amorphous layered aluminum compound of formula Al2O3•nH2O with n=0.3-1.5 and said iron compound being ferric oxide. Calcination is conducted at 680-720 C. EFFECT: increased mechanical strength and activity of catalyst. 3 cl, 1 tbl, 10 ex
