The projection onto the surface of the molecularly oriented layer of the dipole moment of the optical transition of at least one anisotropic absorbing fragment of the molecule of dichroitic material is mainly parallel with the optical axis of the molecularly oriented layer, whose value of dichroitic ratio is not lower than 35 at least in a certain wave band of electromagnetic radiation. Such an optical device can be used in a liquid crystalline display as a polarizer or a phase retarding layer.
