FIELD: magnetic separation of materials. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes extraction of magnetic particles from liquid, gaseous and loose media by means of settling elements at action of non-uniform magnetic field on medium on side of magnetic system located inside settling elements when medium flows around them. Flow of medium is formed taking into account topology of magnetic field in proportion to magnetic force in zones of settling elements in such way that section for motion of medium is narrowed in zones of minimum force action on particle. Proposed method is realized in separator including housing with non-magnetic cover and magnetic unit in form of settling elements consisting of magnetic system assembled from permanent magnets, concentrators and non-magnetic envelope connected to cover and collectors for delivery of medium to be cleaned and discharge of cleaned medium. Magnetic unit is additionally provided with elements which perform function of distributors-formers of flow of medium to be cleaned; they are made in form of rods with curvilinear surface; pitch of convex elements is equal to distance between concentrators of magnetic system of settling elements.
