FIELD: metalworking; turning of used railway wheels on lathes. SUBSTANCE: method consists in that for extension of process potentialities of cutting process optimization, cutting conditions are controlled depending on value of residual magnetization of material of worked surface on its local sections with high hardness of wheel material by variation of turning tool feed and/or turning speed. In this case, to provide for control of value of residual magnetization, installed ahead of turning tool on trajectory of its turning with clearance relative to turned surface is magnetizing head and flux-gate transducer. Additionally installed in a spaced relation to wheel end face are magnetizing head and flux-gate transducer, and signals measured by main and additional transducers are compared, and control signal for variation of turning conditions is formed on basis of said signal difference.
