FIELD: automotive industry. SUBSTANCE: invention is designed for use in exhaust systems of internal combustion engines diesel engines or engines operating on lean mixtures for conversion of exhaust gases. Proposed converter contains at least one honeycomb member with coating made of catalytically active material with gas through channels separated from each other by partitions. Said converter has first and second zones arranged successively in direction of exhaust gas flow S. heat capacity of first zone per unit of honeycomb member volume is less than heat capacity of second zone per unit of honeycomb member volume, heat capacity of second zone per unit of honeycomb member volume is at least 800 J per liter and K (J/1 K). According to preferable design version, thickness of metal sheets without coating is less than 0.06 mm, on the average, preferably less than 0.04 mm, and in second zone, thickness on metal sheets without coating is more than 0.06 mm, on the average, preferably more than 0.08 mm, mainly 0.11 mm. So first zone at high temperature of exhaust gases quickly, reaches working temperature, while second zone accumulates heat for operations under conditions when exhaust gas temperature is relatively low.
